Amica Review…

Amica Auto Insurance Review

Based in Rhode Island since 1907, Amica is the oldest mutual auto insurer in America. It may be small compared to giants like State Farm and Allstate, but Amica boasts some of the best customer satisfaction rates in the industry, as well as a 95% customer retention rate. With plenty of coverage options, it’s definitely worth getting a quote from Amica as you begin your search for the best auto insurance provider.

The Claim

Amica promises “personal service, billing flexibility, and direct contact” through Amica representatives instead of insurance agents.

Is it true?

There are two annual J.D. Power surveys that rate how people feel about their insurance: the Customer Satisfaction survey and the Claims Satisfaction survey. In 2018, no national insurance provider scored higher on those surveys than Amica, so you aren’t likely to get better personal service anywhere else.

As for billing flexibility, Amica provides 12 different discounts (see below) and lets you choose whether to include collision, fire, vandalization, and stolen vehicle coverage in your premium. Plus, it offers several payment methods and schedules.

Finally, unlike other major providers, Amica doesn’t use independent agents to sell coverage. When you buy car insurance from Amica over the phone or in-person, you’ll work directly with a salaried Amica employee; this ensures a more consistent experience and specialized knowledge.

Strong vehicle coverage

Amica auto insurance offers both comprehensive and collision coverage for your car. Collision coverage protects against damage caused in an accident, while comprehensive takes care of damage caused by non-accident-related events, such as fire or vandalism. You can also get gap insurance coverage, which is great for anyone still paying off their car loan. If your car happens to get totaled, Amica will pay the difference between the value of your car and the balance on your loan. If the totaled car is less than a year old, Amica will even replace it with a brand-new version.

Excellent add-on coverage options

Amica’s Platinum Choice Auto coverage allows you to customize your policy and further protect yourself against many types of damage, even identity theft. Amica will monitor your credit and personal information and alert you of any changes, with fraud specialists standing by if your identity is stolen.

Platinum Choice coverage also gives you the option of Good Driving Rewards. You can earn these points by being a safe driver, remaining loyal to Amica, having multiple policies through Amica, or even by referring others. Then, you can take any points that you’ve earned and apply them to waiving an accident surcharge or lowering your deductible. You can pick and choose just one or two of these coverages, or you can bundle all of them together and get a nice discount.

No repair facility restrictions

Unlike many auto insurance companies, Amica doesn’t put any restrictions on where you can take your car to get it fixed, so if you get into an accident, you can go wherever is most convenient for you. Amica does have a list of recommended facilities for those who want it, but you are free to choose a place that is not on the list if you desire.

Possible drawbacks

Missing discounts

Amica offers you a few ways to save on your auto insurance policy, including discounts for being a loyal customer and bundling your home and auto insurance together. However, its discounts fall far behind the best in the industry, and you won’t be able to earn any extra savings for prepaying or being a member of a partner organization. There is also no way to earn discounts for safe driving except through Amica’s Platinum Choice coverage. If you were hoping to take advantage of any of these missing discounts, it’s probably wise to shop around.

Must contact Amica to make certain policy changes

Through your online Amica account, you can view your billing information and make small changes like adding a vehicle under the policyholder’s name or adding a driver that lives at the policyholder’s address. However, for larger changes, such as replacing a vehicle, you must always contact Amica. This is more of an inconvenience than a serious concern, but it is still something that you should be aware of before choosing Amica.

Limited learning materials

Amica doesn’t provide much in the way of resources to help people learn about auto insurance. There are a few FAQs and a glossary on its website, but it is missing more in-depth articles or a blog to help customers understand what they are purchasing. Not everyone needs access to these resources, but they could be especially helpful to those looking to purchase their first auto insurance policy.

Amica vs. Allstate

Amica scores much higher on customer satisfaction surveys than Allstate, so if customer service is important to you, Amica is the clear winner. And even though Amica is a smaller company, its financial rating from A.M. Best is even better than Allstate’s. That said, Allstate provides more options for supplemental coverage. These extra options drive up the price of premiums (one of the most-cited factors for Allstate’s negative reviews), but they could be useful to you if you have specific coverage needs. We recommend gathering quotes from both companies and comparing coverage options before making your decision.

Amica vs. State Farm

State Farm’s performance on J.D. Powers surveys is slightly better than Allstate’s, but still not as high as Amica’s gold standard. As with Allstate, State Farm primarily uses independent insurance agents to sell coverage, so you won’t be dealing with an employee of the company like you would with Amica. However, State Farm offers a few more discounts, so it’s possible that your premiums could be lower. As always, it’s important to compare quotes before selecting your provider.

Amica Auto Insurance FAQ

What do I need to get a quote from Amica?

Amica requires slightly more information than most insurance providers we’ve reviewed. You’ll need:

  • Personal information (name, address, email, phone number)
  • Your vehicle’s year, make, and model
  • Estimated annual mileage
  • Any additional drivers
  • Any accidents or traffic violations in the last three years
  • Supplemental coverage choices

Does Amica cover Uber/Lyft drivers?

No, Amica doesn’t cover “commercial” drivers, even in privately owned vehicles.

What states does Amica operate in?

Amica auto insurance is available in all 50 states.

The Bottom Line

If customer service, ease of repairs, and coverage options are more important to you than getting the most possible discounts, Amica is one the best bets you can make in car insurance — even better, by most accounts, than the “big four” providers (State Farm, GEICO, Allstate, and Progressive). Of course, it’s always a good idea to shop around and compare quotes, but Amica is a solid place to begin your search.
