Cord Cutters: Watch for These Amazon Prime Day Deals…

If you’re one of the 40% of Americans still paying for traditional cable, the case for cutting the cord is stronger than ever. Doing so can help you cut down on your monthly bills, but usually requires a bit of investment in equipment up front, mostly in the form of a streaming device. Luckily Amazon Prime Day is around the corner (July 15-16), and could help you save on those initial costs so you can get on your way to ditching cable. is reader-supported. If you click on or buy something via a link on this page, we may earn a commission.

In our guide to cord-cutting, we outline nine ways to shrink (or scrap) your monthly cable bill. Now for Prime Day, we’re arming you with a shopping list of the different products you should consider before you cut the cord.

Smart TV

The easiest product that will help you ditch cable also happens to be a big part of early-release Prime Day deals: a Smart TV. The Toshiba Fire TV comes pre-loaded with 10,000+ channels and streaming services, some of which can be included with your Prime membership.

TV Streaming Device

If you don’t have a Smart TV, or the one you bought is too old to download newer apps, then a streaming device can help you bring your living room up to speed. TV streaming devices plug into your TV’s HDMI port and allow easy access to shows and movies.

We recommend the Amazon Fire TV Stick (there’s a model for 4K TVs, too), or the Roku Express if you have an older TV. Both of these devices work with Alexa, and according to an Amazon press release, “members will find the biggest Prime Day deals ever on Alexa-enabled devices” during Prime Day. While that’s no guarantee of a specific deal or how good it is, it’s a strong indicator Fire TV and other Alexa-enabled streaming devices will be on sale.

If you’re an Apple devotee, Amazon also sells the Apple TV and Apple TV 4K. These are pricier than Amazon and Roku’s options, but with Apple TV+ coming this fall they may be a worthwhile investment.

TV Antenna

We’re not talking about bunny ears or paper clips — the age-old TV antenna has gotten a modern upgrade in recent years as more people seek them out for over-the-air channels (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS, and the CW). Finding the perfect antenna for your home can be tricky, though, so we have a guide on the topic. For most people, an indoor antenna will suffice, such as the Mohu Leaf 30.

If you already have an antenna, Amazon’s Fire TV Recast lets you record up to two shows at once and has storage for up to 75 hours of HD programming. It’s already $100 off for Prime Day, bringing the price down to $130. Note that you’ll need an HD antenna and a Fire TV, Echo Show, or a mobile device to use the Fire TV Recast.

How to Shop

To make browsing easier, we’ve compiled all of these items onto a shopping list. Check it often, as some of these items may go on sale during the days leading up to Prime Day. When the clock strikes 3 a.m. ET on July 15, use the list to quickly add items to your cart if and when they go on sale.

Of course, you’ll need to be a Prime member to access any Prime Day deals. If you don’t have a membership, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial (or six months if you’re a student) that will last through Prime Day.
